The summer course “ARMED CONFLICTS – Legal and International Relations Perspectives” takes place every year since 2013 in the School of Law of University of Minho.

The main purpose of this course is to raise awareness in civil society to fundamental elements of the armed conflicts in its different dimensions, namely the principles of International Humanitarian Law and to the main difficulties to application of this branch of International Law in contemporaneous armed conflicts. We adopt an interdisciplinary approach, focus on the legal regime applicable to the conflicts but also on international relations, to understand strategic aspects and sociologic problems existing in the societies where armed conflicts appear in order to analyse its contribution for the outbreak of a particular armed conflict, usually referring to recent conflicts or conflicts in course.

The sessions of the course are leading by professors of international law, international relations or sociology and by members of armed forces, with experience in theatre of armed conflict.

Braga ELSA Summer School is organized by ELSA UMinho (The European Law Student’s Association) which belongs to a network of 40,000 law students and young lawyers present in 43 european countries. The Summer School is organized anually during the months of June and July and has a duration of a week. In the duration of the course, participants have acess to an amazing academic programme that aims to give intense and interesting lectures and workshops focusing on the subject chosen for that year. The lectures are given by professionals from lawyers to professors and legal advisers to name a few. The participants can also count on a wonderful social programme that includes visiting neighbouring cities such as Porto and Guimarães.

The Summer School takes place in Braga in our well-equipped School of Law and we accept 30 participants from all around the world per year. This provides an extraordinary opportunity to get to know different cultures as well as different jurisdictions. Due to the diversity of our participants, the official language of the Summer School is english.
