In the School of Law we have the Research Centre for Justice and Governance (JusGov) that’s dedicated to advance research and scholarship in Law, by pursuing an innovative interdisciplinary research programme, engaging in international research networks, investing in a strong dissemination strategy, providing policy relevant research and legal expertise of interest to governments, practitioners and other stakeholders, and by contributing to the scientific initiation and advanced training of early stage researchers.

Taking advantage of its location at UM, JusGov aims to position itself as a research hub for legal studies in the North of Portugal, by bringing together IRs based at UM and at Polytechnic Institutes from the region.

JusGov seeks to explore the role of Law in meeting contemporary societal challenges such as those identified by the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, the achievement of gender equality, the provision of access to justice for all and the building of effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Its research programme – developed by six interconnected research groups – covers basic and applied research, to be conducted by an interdisciplinary team of lawyers and non-lawyers (from the fields of Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, and Economics) and in frequent collaborations across disciplinary lines (e.g. with Computer Engineering and Health Sciences).
